Vasectomy Instructions
Shave as much hair from around the testicles and the penis as you possibly can on the evening before or on the day when the vasectomy is to be done. Do not use other types of hair remover.
After shaving the area, wash the penis and scrotum thoroughly; shower or bathe to remove all loose hairs.
It is essential you have someone to drive you to and from the office.
You may eat before you come in for a vasectomy.
You will need to purchase a support strap and bring it with you to your appointment. You can find these at any drugstore or Wal-Mart.
DO NOT TAKE ASPIRIN OR ANY ASPIRIN PRODUCTS (ADVIL, ALEVE, IBUPROFEN, GOODYS POWDER, ETC) AT LEAST 10 DAYS BEFORE YOUR VASECTOMY.
AFTER YOUR VASECTOMY
Go home and lie down.
Apply ice pack to scrotum until you go to bed at night.
Tomorrow and the next day you may be up, but no physical activity. Take it easy.
You may shower tomorrow morning.
Abstain from strenuous activity including sexual intercourse for one week.
You may have some bruising on the scrotum, even onto the penis. This is normal. If there is heavy bleeding from the incision, call us.
Some swelling is normal. If the swelling becomes severe (golf ball size), call us.
Expect some discomfort. Take Tylenol, if necessary. If your doctor gave you a prescription for pain medicine, you can use it sparingly.
Wear suspensory or tight fitting underwear one week following your vasectomy or until you feel comfortable without one.
It is important that you keep your follow-up appointment in one week.
The stitches used will come out on their own.
Continue birth control until your doctor has checked your semen specimen and has told you that unprotected intercourse is safe.
If it hurts, don't do it.
Do not drive if you are taking narcotics.
